Voluntarism for the New Century: Where Are We Heading?
As society changes, the nature of voluntarism changes, said
Steve McCurley, at the November 4, 2003 conference "Voluntarism
for the New Century: Where Are We Heading?" GNYADVS co-sponsored
this conference with United Hospital Fund held at Lighthouse
International.
A partner in VM Systems, Mr. McCurley described how time
pressures, economic concerns, and increased caregiving
responsibilities are affecting potential volunteers. Volunteer
directors must take these trends into consideration as they
shape volunteer opportunities.
Mr. McCurley described strategies for engaging busy volunteers,
including short-term assignments, on-line volunteering, and
workplace opportunities. In afternoon concurrent sessions, John
D. Vogelsang, associate director of the Support Center for
Non-profit Management, spoke about strategies for changing
organizational culture to enhance growth while Steve McCurley
lead an interactive workshop on developing and facilitating
creative roles for volunteers. The conference opened with a
keynote by Fund president James R. Tallon, Jr., about the
challenges facing New York's health care system. |
