"SURVEY REPORT & ANALYSIS...HOW CAN I USE THIS DATA?"

In 2004, GNYADVS developed and distributed a profiling
survey to its membership. The subsequent report based upon the
survey results provided members with insight into areas such as
salaries, education levels, and fundraising activities, and
members found that this information proved useful in negotiating
increases in staffing, salaries and even budget lines in their
facilities. Given the success of the original survey, the
Association decided to launch a follow up survey in the summer
of 2006. This new survey sought to provide further comparative
information in areas of specific interest to the members,
improve the position of the members, and help identify trends in
the profession.
In an effort to structure and analyze the survey most
effectively, as well as to protect the anonymity of the
responses, the Strategic Planning Committee of GNYADVS engaged
Ms. Edith Cresmer, Consultant, to distribute and collect the
surveys and analyze and report on the responses.
Ms. Cresmer holds a BS from Fordham University and an MS in
Urban Planning from Hunter College. She retired from the NYC
Health & Hospital Corporation in 1999 after nearly 25 years at
the Corporation and at the NYC Department of Mental Health,
where she held increasingly responsible positions which evolved
in concert with changes in healthcare and City government.
Additionally, she has been a volunteer at the American Museum of
Natural History and at the Medicare Rights Center, a non-profit
advocacy organization. Ms. Cresmer’s skills in computer analysis
and survey design were gained during her employment.
On November 10, 2006, at Visiting Nurse Service of New York, Ms.
Cresmer presented the survey findings to the Association. A
printed report with interpretation of the results, including
graphs and charts, was distributed to all attendees. The survey
tool was divided into two sections. The first section, the
Facility Information Survey, covered information about the
facilities in which members are employed. The second section,
the Survey of Volunteer Staff, dealt with the experiences and
views of individuals who work in volunteer management. There was
a 50% response rate to the Facility Information Survey and a 56%
response rate to the Survey of Volunteer Staff. Among the most
interesting statistics were the following:
- 64% of respondents entered the field by chance, 36% by
choice;
- 52% of respondents are between the ages of 40-60;
- 46% of respondents hold advanced degrees;
- Job satisfaction levels are high, over 80% average in each
of the four measures used, and
- The average duration of employment is 11.3 years.
Ms. Cresmer concluded her presentation by offering her
thoughts on planning for the future. She stated, "The outcome of
the current survey exercise depends on how the Membership uses
the data presented and, as well, on their ability to provide
clear documentation of their achievements, of their talents and
of the skill sets their jobs require. If another survey is
undertaken, advance preparation, in data collection and in
conceptualizing goals, can make it even more successful." |
