Professional Development
Pat Rowell's address was powerful in her exhortation of our
leadership, energy and knowledge. Her speech was marked with
challenging questions:
- How did you get here (to the field of volunteer
management)? Was it by chance? Or, by choice? Pat remarked
that she did not choose this profession but that over the
years "this has become my profession, this is what I do, I'm
putting my heart and soul into it."
- Ask yourself, "Am I making an impact?"
- Referring to the millions of volunteers in America,
"Imagine if they were all screwing up?"
- How do you get others in your organization to say
"Wow!"?
- We're the expert resource for our volunteers: Is that
seen in your hospital?
- Do you ask to be a part of new initiatives in your
organization?
- Are you the "go to" person in your organization on
matters of JCAHO, state regulations and procedures?
Pat told us one story about travelling to Lithuania where she
was involved in an effort to try to get folks in that part of
the world to understand what volunteerism is. After much
confusion about the term and the concept of volunteering, one
woman came up to Pat and said, oh, we call that person a "free
will helper."
Pat concluded by praising us for our willingness to embrace
certification. She noted our skill, imagination and poise. "Stay
close to missions" she recommended. "We are the coaches for one
another. We have our fingers on this pulse of human energy."
